One pair instead of a rack

See also the equipment hub and starter kit. Prices below are indicative 2026 UK mail-order ranges, not live quotes. Check current listings: selectorised adjustable dumbbells, spin-lock loadable handles, fixed hex pair. Affiliate links do not change the criteria here.

Three mechanisms

TypeHow it worksBest forWatch-outs
Selectorised (dial / pin)Quick change, compactPeople who super-set a lotCost; some units feel wide in the hand
Spin-lock / loadable handlesYou add platesBudget, incremental loadingSlow between sets; collars must be honest
Fixed hex / rubberNo adjustmentBeginners, conditioningNeed many pairs; storage

If your programme is full body with lots of load jumps, selectorised or a well-made spin-lock with a plate stack beats a 3-pair starter set you outgrow in six weeks. If you are still on week one, a cheap fixed pair is enough.

Criteria that matter in a British house

  1. Weight range — enough headroom that you are not maxed on rows in month two.
  2. Increments — 2kg jumps are usable; 5kg jumps stall overload.
  3. Width and knurl — if they do not fit in a goblet squat against your chest, they fail a core use case.
  4. Drop rating — many “adjustable” units must not be dropped. Flats and first-floor neighbours make this a legal and social issue, not a PR issue.
  5. Warranty and spare parts from a UK-reachable seller.

Mirafit-style UK brands often win on support and spare collars. Import bargains sometimes win on price and lose on a pin that shears.

When not to buy adjustable

  • You already have a commercial gym you use four days a week and you will not train at home
  • You want to deadlift heavy in a flat (you want a gym platform, not clever dumbbells)
  • The unit is wider than your bench press path

Programme fit

Adjustable DBs cover: goblet squat, floor/bench press, one-arm row, RDL, press, lunges. They do not replace a squat rack for heavy barbell back squats. That is fine. Most people need the dumbbell pattern more than they need a 20kg starter Olympic bar they cannot load.
