A home gym is a constraint, not a failure

Kit shopping lives on equipment, adjustable dumbbells, and the starter list. This page is the environment and the plan.

Floor, ceiling, and the downstairs neighbours

  • Load spreading: a thick rubber mat (20mm+) under a bench is not optional on a first-floor flat. Deadlifts in a flat above someone are how you get a visit from the freeholder. A 20mm gym mat is the first spend, not a decorative rack.
  • Ceiling height: overhead press with a 7-foot ceiling is a trap. Seated press or landmine if you cannot lock out standing.
  • Damp garages: UK garages rust cheap bars. Wipe the bar, silica gel in the toolbox, do not leave chrome plates on a wet floor.
  • Electrics: a space heater plus a treadmill on a 13A socket is how you discover the fuse.

What “enough kit” means

You can train well with:

  1. One pair of adjustable dumbbells (or a small fixed set)
  2. A bench that does not fold like a deckchair
  3. Floor space for a plank and a reverse lunge

A barbell and rack are upgrades, not day-one requirements. See starter kit for a £-denominated ladder.

A home session that matches the gym programmes

Use the same patterns as full body: squat, hinge, push, pull, carry or core. Example:

PatternHome version
SquatGoblet squat, heel-elevated squat, split squat
HingeDumbbell RDL, hip thrust (bench + DB)
PushFloor press, push-up, seated DB press
PullOne-arm row, backpack row, doorway row (sensible setup only)
Core / carrySuitcase carry down the hall, dead bug, side plank

Progress the same way: overload. When the dumbbells are maxed, you need more plates, a barbell, or a gym membership — maths here.

Neighbours and hours

If you live in a terrace, do not drop weights. Tempo the last rep. Save maximal deadlifts for a gym platform. Early Sunday morning is not a PR window.

When to keep the commercial gym anyway

  • You want a cable stack, a hack squat, or classes
  • Your floor cannot take a rack
  • You will not train unless you leave the house (that is a valid personality)

A hybrid — two home sessions plus one gym session — is a grown-up solution, not a cop-out.
